South Bay Brass Holiday Benefit Concert

The South Bay Brass invites you to an evening of holiday music Sunday, December 7th at 7:30 p.m. at Saratoga Federated Church, 20390 Park Pl., Saratoga. SBB will be joined by the SFC Ringers, Mary Norton, Organ, and the audience in a sing-a-long. Admission is free, but we are asking audience members to bring canned goods (or a check) to be donated to CityTeam, which provides food, quality used clothing and household items to families in need throughout the year. The concert includes Vivaldi%u2019s Winter from The Four Seasons, Bach%u2019s Mighty Lord and King All Glorious from Christmas Oratorio and jazzy arrangements of popular Christmas tunes. Two soloists will be featured for this concert. Steve Anderson will play Christmas Song on flugelhorn, and Greg Tyler, tuba, will play Swingle Bells by Raymond Burkhart.
Newark Brass Festival, patron Denis Wick

Newark Brass Festival is a national solo competition and gala concert. The competition is for players aged 11 to 30, minimum standard grade 5, any syllabus. Judges are Paul Archibald, Nigel Black, John Kenny and Stephen Wick. Prizes are to the value of £1,500. Closing date is November 5 2008.
South Central ITEA Regional Tuba and Euphonium Conference

Plan to attend the ITEA South Central at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi (the Island University) for Spring Break 2009. All concerts and ensemble performances will take place at the Performing Arts Center http://pac.tamucc.edu/index.html located on Corpus Christi Bay. The conference is open to College, High School and Adult participants. The theme for the conference will be low brass careers in the 21st century. Featured artists will be listed soon. For the 28th consecutive year, we've held this event in Suffolk County on Long Island. Largely geared toward public school euphonium and tuba players, the event attracts players of all ages. Dr. Charles Guy, of the Crane School of Music of SUNY Potsdam will be this year's featured guest artist, along with The Long Island Tuba Quartet. Master Class in Tuba Performance

Rex Martin, professor of tuba and euphonium at Northwestern University, and Gene Pokorny, principal tuba of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, will present a five day performance workshop for tuba players. During this intensive week, students will have the opportunity to study with both teachers in a master class setting. Various sessions will include, but are not limited to: audition preparation, recital preparation, efficient practice techniques, the psychology of performance, effectively combating stage fright, fundamental and advanced techniques, breathing and pedagogy. In addition to the master classes, both Mr. Pokorny and Mr. Martin will present solo recitals. The deadline for performer applications is May 1. Auditors are encouraged. Musical instruments have been built in high quality in the "Musikwinkel" for 350 years. The competition has its roots in this long and living condition. The competition started with the modest beginning of a violin contest from 1950 to 1956. The competition has developed to a performance of international meaning and in 1993 it was admitted to the "WORLD FEDERATION OF INTERNATIONAL MUSIC COMPETITIONS."

Quest clinicians this year are Sotto Voce-- an internationally recognized tuba/euphonium quartet from the United States. Join players from the Maritime Provinces, Quebec and New England states for a weekend of clinics and performances of music written for low brass ensembles. The workshop is open to players of all ages and levels of ability. There will be a public concert Saturday night featuring all players and clinicians. The event will be on the University of New Brunswick Campus in Fredericton, New Brunswick, Canada.
