Yid Vicious Klezmer Ensemble CD Release Party Saturday, November 22, 2008, 9:30 pm Restaurant Magnus $5 cover www.yidvicious.com
This being the official, legal, and sanctioned announcement of the Yid Vicious CD Release Blowout, the afore mentioned cd, or “compact disc” being a new collection in the “klezmer” genre featuring antiquities and contemporary offerings side by side in a rich musical broth the likes of which upon even such a figure as JOHN D ROCKEFELLER HIMSELF has never feasted, and which bears the distinctive and worthy title,
“Dollars to Doinas”,
which event, barring natural catastrophe, plague, war, labor strife, dirigible crash, gout epidemic and zombie insurgency, will commence
Saturday, November 22 at 9:30 PM
at the esteemed Restaurant Magnus, 120 E. Wilson Street, in the heart of Madison’s respectable and handsome “down” town. The acclaimed Urban Van Hoof, Chairman of the PRESTIGIOUS Foundation for Freylekh Affairs, will, below, expound at some length on this most remarkable of modern events.
“Dollars to Doinas” marks the continuance of Yid Vicious’ breakneck recording schedule, it being the band’s first release in only three and a half years. How does Yid Vicious do it? While the individual members of this remarkable organization aren’t particularly driven, they DO, collectively, share a distinct feature: moxie. In fact, studies performed at the Foundation for Freylekh Affairs (or “FFFA”) have revealed that “Dollars to Doinas” contains eighty percent, or four-fifths, moxie. This is a moxie ratio (or “MR”) unheard of in the history of recorded music.
Additionally, “Dollars to Doinas” has music from the old Eastern European/Russian Jewish traditions, played at various tempi and with creative embellishments. The “cover” of the cd features a colorful and toothsome dessert. The musicians ply their trade on fiddle, voice, soprano saxophone, clarinet, accordion, “French” horn, tenor saxophone, bass clarinet, guitar, tuba, drums and theremin. The most modern recording techniques have been employed to enhance the sound of the music. The cd would be purely instrumental, save for a pair of vocal interjections by the bewitching Anna Purnell. You can dance to it, if you’ve a mind to (and feet).
Finally, the members of Yid Vicious (Matt Appleby, Geoff Brady, Kia Karlen, Melissa Reiser, Greg Smith, Dave Spies, and Daithi Wolfe) hope you will like “Dollars to Doinas”, should you have the opportunity to hear it (which you will), and would be honored to have you in attendance on November 22.
- Urban VanHoof Chairman, Foundation for Freylekh Affairs

BEN STAPP TRIO With TONY MALABY/SATOSHI TAKEISHI - Ecstasis (Uqbar 01; USA) Features Tony Malaby on tenor and soprano saxes, Satoshi Takeishi on percussion, and Benjamin Stapp on tuba; all original music by the tubist. Over the past few years there has been a number of great tuba players emerging from the local scene like Jesse Dulman, Jose Davilla, Marcus Rojas, as well as out-of-towners like Michel Godard, Tom Heasley and Oren Marshall. Ben Stapp in a new man in town and has been stopping in and letting us check out his assorted projects on CD-R. This is his first legit CD as a leader and it is a stunning debut. Ben has chosen two great musicians from much different situations: the ubiquitous Tony Malaby on saxes and diverse percussion hero, Satoski Takeishi, who has worked with Myra Melford, Shoko Nagai, Anthony Braxton and Dave Liebman. "Painted Shark" opens this disc with a memorable theme. Mr. balances between taking the role of a bassist and playing most impressive solos. While Malaby takes a coy, laid-back soprano solo, Ben buzzes around him spinning impressive tube counterpoint. "Machu Picchu" is a somber, haunting work for snake charming soprano sax and growling tuba. Satoshi's laid-back simmering hand-percussion is also consistently marvelous as he weaves a web around his two cozy comrades. In many ways this is a most perfect and finely balanced trio with no superfluous rules or roles. What I find most interesting is that Tony Malaby sounds completely different here than in any other situation since he must play with thoughtful restraint and quiet elegance throughout. Ben also does a fine job of playing melodic, crafty basslines as well as soloing with an impressive flair. Ben utilizes just the right amount of echo to give his tubs that fat, warm and lyrical quality. Nice to hear a disc that is rich in detail, warm in sound without ever having to scream for attention. - Bruce Gallanter (Downtown Music Gallery)

UK Euphonium makes the Italian Press!
Posted on Fri, 03 Oct 2008 16:35:48 by ITEAonline.org Editor
Willson Euphonium artist Charley Brighton was featured in the Italian newspaper La Gazzetta Del Mezzogiorno following his premiere of Masquerade by Lorenzo Melissano. After hearing the recording from the recital at St. Mary’s Slough with Malcolm Stowell (piano), the composer published a full article in the Viva La Citta section of the publication, together with photographs. ‘The music was a joy to play and rehearse, particularly considering it was his first work for the Euphonium. We now have another new piece from the composer, ‘Centurion’ which we will premiere in February early next year’. Doing the Double In November, Charley will feature a double recital with two different programmes, the first at lunchtime in St. Mary’s Slough, and the second at All Saints Church Wokingham in the evening. Both recitals will have premieres in their programmes. 3 New Works Sonata for Euphonium is a new 3 movement suite written for Charley and Malcolm by American composer, Elaine Fine, from Ohio. Another American composer, Joe Miserendino from Pennsylannia has written a short but challenging ‘Brief Interlude’ especially for the recital and Terry Treherne’s beautiful new composition, ‘Tranquillity’ will feature the organ in the accompaniment. Garry Hedley (Euphonium) will join Charley as a guest in a duet at St. Mary’s and both recitals are free. More details can be found online at: www.euph9.freeserve.co.uk
