His multi-faceted musical career as a soloist, chamber musician, and recording artist has taken him all over the world. The unique virtuosity and musicality Mr. Baadsvik brings to the tuba has established him as the exemplar of the instrument. He will perform on October 21 live at the University of South Florida.

Logon to http://www.banddirector.com/ and the live video player window should automatically launch, and the broadcast will automatically play at the beginning of each scheduled performance. Wilson Street, in the heart of Madison’s respectable and handsome “down” town. The acclaimed Urban Van Hoof, Chairman of the PRESTIGIOUS Foundation for Freylekh Affairs, will, below, expound at some length on this most remarkable of modern events.

“Dollars to Doinas” marks the continuance of Yid Vicious’ breakneck recording schedule, it being the band’s first release in only three and a half years. How does Yid Vicious do it? While the individual members of this remarkable organization aren’t particularly driven, they DO, collectively, share a distinct feature: moxie. In fact, studies performed at the Foundation for Freylekh Affairs (or “FFFA”) have revealed that “Dollars to Doinas” contains eighty percent, or four-fifths, moxie. This is a moxie ratio (or “MR”) unheard of in the history of recorded music.

Additionally, “Dollars to Doinas” has music from the old Eastern European/Russian Jewish traditions, played at various tempi and with creative embellishments. The “cover” of the cd features a colorful and toothsome dessert. The musicians ply their trade on fiddle, voice, soprano saxophone, clarinet, accordion, “French” horn, tenor saxophone, bass clarinet, guitar, tuba, drums and theremin. The most modern recording techniques have been employed to enhance the sound of the music. The cd would be purely instrumental, save for a pair of vocal interjections by the bewitching Anna Purnell. You can dance to it, if you’ve a mind to (and feet).

Finally, the members of Yid Vicious (Matt Appleby, Geoff Brady, Kia Karlen, Melissa Reiser, Greg Smith, Dave Spies, and Daithi Wolfe) hope you will like “Dollars to Doinas”, should you have the opportunity to hear it (which you will), and would be honored to have you in attendance on November 22.

- Urban VanHoof
Chairman, Foundation for Freylekh Affairs

By David Spies

UK Euphonium makes the Italian Press!

Willson Euphonium artist Charley Brighton was featured in the Italian newspaper La Gazzetta Del Mezzogiorno following his premiere of Masquerade by Lorenzo Melissano. After hearing the recording from the recital at St. Mary’s Slough with Malcolm Stowell (piano), the composer published a full article in the Viva La Citta section of the publication, together with photographs.

‘The music was a joy to play and rehearse, particularly considering it was his first work for the Euphonium. We now have another new piece from the composer, ‘Centurion’ which we will premiere in February early next year’.

Doing the Double
In November, Charley will feature a double recital with two different programmes, the first at lunchtime in St. Mary’s Slough, and the second at All Saints Church Wokingham in the evening. Both recitals will have premieres in their programmes.

3 New Works
Sonata for Euphonium is a new 3 movement suite written for Charley and Malcolm by American composer, Elaine Fine, from Ohio. Another American composer, Joe Miserendino from Pennsylannia has written a short but challenging ‘Brief Interlude’ especially for the recital and Terry Treherne’s beautiful new composition, ‘Tranquillity’ will feature the organ in the accompaniment.

Garry Hedley (Euphonium) will join Charley as a guest in a duet at St. Mary’s and both recitals are free.

To the Edge of Space: CD recording featuring United States Air Force Band of Mid-America

The ITEA Journal extends great appreciation to the USAF Band of Mid-America for providing this CD for our ITEA members. The recording also features the Four Star Brass tuba-euphonium ensemble in the recording’s title track, To the Edge of Space composed by Patrick Sheridan and Sam Pilafian.

The following are program notes provided by Patrick Sheridan.
Quote: To the Edge of Space was commissioned by Captain Donald Schofield and the USAF Band of Mid-America in May 2005. Imagine our surprise when asked to write a“concerto grosso” for the Four Star Brass tuba-euphonium ensemble and band…in thefunk style!?! A few minutes later the curtain parted and our mind movie started to unfold. The USAF is constantly pushing the envelope of human potential and technology in asearch for the edge of space. Equally adventuresome is the task given to the Four StarBrass as they are propelled to the frontier of what is possible for low clef dwellers. The Edge? The Fringe? A low brass section turned into a FUNK MONSTER! In a tempo reminiscent of the great James Brown and His Fabulous Flames.’ “In a Cold Sweat,” the Four Star Brass is catapulted into the “funkosphere” as the world’s largest five-string bass guitar. They trade riffs, breaks, and solos in a collective cadenza that represents a “funkified” sound map of the Milky Way. ~ Patrick Sheridan

By ITEAonline.org Editor

Winston Morris, the Tennessee Tech Tuba Ensemble’s director and Professor of Tuba and Euphonium at Tennessee Tech University, was recently featured in an article at Ed News.Org, the Internet’s number one source for education news and information. The article was written by Michael F. Shaughnessy who is currently Professor in Educational Studies and is a Consulting Editor for Gifted Education International and Educational Psychology Review. The article is well done and has many insightful questions into the life and career of one of the most highly regarded directors and pedagogues in the tuba and euphonium world. Mr. Shaughnessy asks such questions as “What first got you into music, and then specifically the tuba? And, I have often heard it said that, “If you put a musical instrument into a child’s hands early enough, those hands will never hold a gun or a knife to harm or injure others.” I am not sure who said it, but what are your thoughts on it?” For the complete article as well as tuba and euphonium related links, go to:
http://ednews.org/articles/19913/1/An-Interview-with-Winston-Morris-Titan-of-the-Tuba/Page1.html

By ITEAonline.org Editor

New Jazz Release

BEN STAPP TRIO With TONY MALABY/SATOSHI TAKEISHI - Ecstasis (Uqbar 01; USA) Features Tony Malaby on tenor and soprano saxes, Satoshi Takeishi on percussion, and Benjamin Stapp on tuba; all original music by the tubist. Over the past few years there has been a number of great tuba players emerging from the local scene like Jesse Dulman, Jose Davilla, Marcus Rojas, as well as out-of-towners like Michel Godard, Tom Heasley and Oren Marshall. Ben Stapp in a new man in town and has been stopping in and letting us check out his assorted projects on CD-R. This is his first legit CD as a leader and it is a stunning debut. Ben has chosen two great musicians from much different situations: the ubiquitous Tony Malaby on saxes and diverse percussion hero, Satoski Takeishi, who has worked with Myra Melford, Shoko Nagai, Anthony Braxton and Dave Liebman. "Painted Shark" opens this disc with a memorable theme. Mr. balances between taking the role of a bassist and playing most impressive solos. While Malaby takes a coy, laid-back soprano solo, Ben buzzes around him spinning impressive tube counterpoint. "Machu Picchu" is a somber, haunting work for snake charming soprano sax and growling tuba. Satoshi's laid-back simmering hand-percussion is also consistently marvelous as he weaves a web around his two cozy comrades. In many ways this is a most perfect and finely balanced trio with no superfluous rules or roles. What I find most interesting is that Tony Malaby sounds completely different here than in any other situation since he must play with thoughtful restraint and quiet elegance throughout. Ben also does a fine job of playing melodic, crafty basslines as well as soloing with an impressive flair. Ben utilizes just the right amount of echo to give his tubs that fat, warm and lyrical quality. Nice to hear a disc that is rich in detail, warm in sound without ever having to scream for attention. - Bruce Gallanter (Downtown Music Gallery)

to purchase the cd or preview 4 of the 9 track, copy and paste this into your browser:

http://www.digstation.com/albumdetails.aspx?albumID=ALB000023434

By Tom McCaslin

NEW RECORDINGS

Original Tennessee Tech Tuba Ensemble Recordings Released

The ORIGINAL six LPs that were produced of the Tennessee Tech Tuba Ensemble (TTTE) have now been released on CD.

These recordings were produced between 1975 and 1986. Two Golden Crest recordings, two KM Publications recordings, and two Mark Recordings LPs are represented in these three CDs. The VINTAGE CD is from the two original Golden Crest recordings and the TTTE and All That Jazz and Heavy Metal represent a compilation of “jazz/pop” pieces and “serious” pieces from the next four LPs they released. Winston Morris said, “It is amazing how well these reissues sound considering the original tapes for the Golden Crest material is over 30 years old.” Check out the “Recordings” section (http://orgs.tntech.edu/tuba/default.asp?page=recordings ) on the TTTE website for complete information and a couple of sound files for each release. With the upcoming release of LEGACY (the TTTE 40th Anniversary All Star Alumni Ensemble recording of the nine major commissions composed for the 40th birthday), the TTTE is responsible for 23 recordings in the past 40 years. By this fall the TTTE will have 12 CDs available, which will contain 90% of everything they ever recorded.

In the meantime, check out the three new CD reissues. All funds from the sales of these recordings (and their mutes, etc.) go 100% to support the continuing activities of the TTTE.

By Tom McCaslin

Bach but is actually the 2nd. movement of a concerto for Viola.

Henri is credited with the "J.C. Bach Concerto," for viola. This is now used in the Suzuki method for viola, and are often referred to as "The J.C. Bach/Casadesus Concerto". Scholarly criticism has confirmed that this concerto was written by Henri Casadesus in the style of its purported composer.

Charley Brighton

By ITEAonline.org Editor

Gene Pokorny at Summer Brass Festival

A Musical Feast for Tuba Players at Summer Brass Institute and Festival 2008—featuring Gene Pokorny and Peter Wahrhaftig

Playing for hours in quintets and large ensembles provided exciting opportunities for tuba players at the Summer Brass Institute’s Sixth annual Art of Sound Festival on the San Francisco Peninsula in July 2008. Low brass faculty were Gene Pokorny, principal tuba with the Chicago Symphony, Peter Wahrhaftig, principal tuba with the San Francisco Ballet Orchestra, and John Engelkes, bass trombone with San Francisco Symphony. Central to the experience was a master class given by Gene Pokorny in which tubists from all over the USA, Puerto Rico and Canada performed works by Hindemith, Koetsier and Ralph Vaughan Williams in addition to an array of challenging passages from standard orchestra literature. A low brass class entitled “Cover Your Basses”, given by Peter Wahrhaftig and John Engelkes, emphasizing teamwork between the bass trombone and tuba in the orchestral section, enhanced the experience as well. Lessons with Pokorny and Wahrhaftig were in great demand among the nine tubists participating. Most exciting for Fellowship recipients was the opportunity to perform side by side with Symphony professionals in the Memorial Church concert for brass and organ at Stanford University, and again with Chris Martin, Gene Pokorny and Bay Brass members in a concert in Stent Hall on the Festival campus. Tubists could be heard at every event: playing in the “Winning the Chair” audition class with Jonathan Ring of the SF Symphony, performing in Mark Lawrence’s master class and in the many large ensembles and quintets, plus a couple of low brass ensembles. Participants also benefited from chances to hear the San Francisco Symphony perform Pictures at An Exhibition in Davies Symphony Hall and to hear a concert of the Symphony in Dolores Park, featuring guest trumpet soloist Alison Balsam. Excitement is building for The Art of Sound in 2009; for more information and to apply for SBI 2009, please visit http://brass.menloschool.org

By Vicky Greenbaum

In October, Mark Fisher, trombonist with the Chicago Lyric Opera and well known to the euphonium world for his compact disc recording, Eufish, gave a recital and master classes, which included coaching for euphonium students. In November, Dr. Kenneth Kroesche of Oakland University was in residence for four days. He also worked with both euphonium and trombone students, gave a solo recital using both instruments, performed with the UW-Eau Claire Wind Symphony, and conducted the UW-Eau Claire Symphony Band. With “being a successful doubler” as a theme for the year, April 3 will find University of Arkansas euphonium/tuba professor and premier euphonium/tuba performer, Dr. Benjamin Pierce, on campus for a recital and masterclass.

Brass Bands to get 'Concertante for Euphonium' now too....

UK composer Terry Treherne has just completed the long awaited brass band score for his ‘Concertante for Euphonium’.

Originally written for Euphonium & String Orchestra, the beautiful work has been premiered by its dedicatee Charley Brighton in two previous versions. The first with Malcolm Stowell (piano) in a recital at St. Mary’s Slough and the second (in its new key) with the City of London Winds (John Andrews) at a concert in St. Paul’s, Covent Garden, London, where Terry was able to hear the music live in rehearsal and in the concert.

Terry Treherne was conducting Alder Valley Brass when he first worked with soloist Charley Brighton in 1990. After a gap of some 15 years, Charley premiered Terry’s first work for Euphonium and winds, ‘Recollections’ with the BBC Elstree Concert Band , recorded live at the Maida Vale Studios in London.

Written in a single movement, the wind band version of ‘Concertante’ opens with meandering lines of accompaniment, mainly in the lower half of the band, before the soloist enters with a sustained melodic line. A lilting 6/8 “Allegro con spirito” sets the lively euphonium part against side drum figures and interjections from various sections of the ensemble. The flutes are used only sparingly, most of the emphasis being on the middle and bass sections.
The main theme appears in full for the first time, initially accompanied by the clarinet choir and tuba, later replaced by a brass chorale, followed by an effective few bars for trombones and tuba. Much of the solo line is in the upper register, with long, expressive phrases.
The return of the “Allegro” is marked by an oboe solo answered by the soloist, before the full sound of the ensemble leads into the finale, in which the majestic solo line soares over the accompaniment.

With the main theme of the work being so endearing, Terry has also reworked it into a slow solo for Baritone and brass band titled ‘Sincerity’ for Sue Vel as a birthday gift.

Terry’s website can be viewed here;

http://www.euph9.freeserve.co.uk/terry.htm

and the live wind band premiere recording can be heard here;

http://www.acidplanet.com/artist.asp?PID=1081629&t=1370

Charley is currently working with Ascot Brass in Berkshire with a view to the premier of the new brass band version, and will premiere yet another new Euphonium solo by Terry ‘Tranquillity’ (with organ accompaniment) in his next recital at St. Mary’s on November 22nd.

Terry’s continuous output of Euphonium works provides some very nice additions to the repertoire for both soloist and audience. Long may they continue.

Charley Brighton.

By John Monroe

Baadsvik Releases New Solo CD

Released on the BIS label, CD 1625, this new recording is with the Swedish Wind Orchestra conducted by Christian Lindberg. Featured are tuba concerti by Fredrik Högberg, Boris Diew, Daniel Nelson, and Fnugg Blue by Baadsvik/Giske. The CD contains other great repertoire including Bernstein’s Prelude, Fugue and Riffs for solo clarinet and jazz ensemble and Anthony Turnage’s A Quick Blast for wind, brass and percussion

This is carefully picked music with a message. Högbergs Troll Tuba is based upon a Norwegian fairytale about the Troll and the three Goats. Øystein alternates between actually telling the story and playing the tuba. The orchestra follows up with playing and spoken comments. It all leads to a chocking twist at the end.... Diew’s tuba concerto was written for Baadsvik in 1996. Diew is a professor in composition at the Moscow Conservatory. He claimed that this concerto for tuba and wind band is the most complicated solo piece he has ever written. Daniel Nelson’s tuba concerto Metallephonic was written for the Nordic Chamber Orchestra and Baadsvik. According to composer Nelson, who was born in Raleigh, North Carolina, USA, the idea for the music was born when he was listening to Beethoven on headphones. Through Beethoven’s music some strange interference emerged. It was simply Daniels neighbor playing Back in Black by ACDC loudly on his stereo. It was this peculiar mix of styles and sounds that gave Mr. Nelson the inspiration to write the tuba concerto Metallephonic.

2nd Review from All About Jazz

It's a prime example of the new globalism. California-born tubist Ben Stapp graduated from UCLA, studied with
English tuba master Roger Bobo overseas, then spent additional time studying in Portugal before returning
home to record his debut album, Ecstasis. Demonstrating nimble dexterity and a keen melodic
sense, the youthful Stapp holds his own in the heavyweight company of saxophonist Tony Malaby and
percussionist Satoshi Takeishi.

Tuba driven small combos were a favored line-up of saxophonists Arthur Blythe and Sam Rivers during the
seventies loft era; the tuba helped reestablish a historical connection between free jazz and the rich polyphony
of early jazz styles such as Dixieland and ragtime. Stapp mostly avoids such pre-swing forms however, tending
towards a slightly modal pan Asian aesthetic. Malaby's serpentine soprano and muscular tenor musings,
Takeishi's scintillating Taiko influenced percussion and the leader's euphonious bass lines congeal into an
exotic mosaic of plangent themes and soaring motifs. Modal structures notwithstanding, Stapp also works
conventional chord changes, thorny counterpoint, and elastic rhythms into his tunefully accessible, yet
harmonically intricate writing.

The trio vacillates between the written and improvised with poised authority and an empathetic rapport
that blurs the line between freedom and form. Stapp's melodious variations complement Takeishi's ceremonial
fanfares and kaleidoscopic accents, providing the trio with a harmonically solid, yet rhythmically fluid
foundation that veers from buoyant to introspective. Malaby reigns in his extroverted tendencies, splitting his
time evenly between soprano and tenor, while embellishing Stapp's memorable themes with lyrical restraint.
<p><P>Despite the limited instrumental palette, Stapp utilizes an array of inventive arrangements to provide the
trio with ample space for individual expression. Unaccompanied cadenzas, intimate duets and collective
improvisation are all featured alongside more conventional devices, like hypnotic bass ostinatos and concise
call and response, keeping the structures malleable and joyously unpredictable.

A credit to both the trio's conversational interplay and Stapp's resilient writing, the session flows with the
graceful logic of a suite rather than a collection of disparate tunes. Ecstasis marks the solid debut
of a fresh, new voice.

<p><a href="http://www.allaboutjazz.com/php/article.php?id=31200">All About Jazz</a>

<p>Check out the <a href="http://www.digstation.com/AlbumDetails.aspx?albumID=ALB000023434">CD</a> on the net</p>

By ben stapp

Forty-five participants took part in this event hosted by the Society of Low Brass in Vestby in partnership with the Norwegian Band Association. Guest artists were Øystein Baadsvik (tuba), Tormod Flaten (euphonium), and Lars Andreas Haug (jazz tuba).

Øysten Baadsvik in solo performance accompanied by Ieva Struzaite

Tormod Flaten lecturing about daily exercises for euphonium

The workshop’s objective was to create a place for all that are interested in tuba and euphonium, in a friendly and musical atmosphere intended to create motivation and interest for our instruments and the music. The days of the workshop were filled with music.

Saturday night Tuba Jam with Lars Andreas Haug and Kristoffer Lo

Master Class with Øystein Baadsvik, student: Finn Brynestad

The opening concert included impressive performances by Øystein Baadsvik and Tormod Flaten, accompanied by pianist Ieva Struzaite. The German instrument manufacturer Miraphone was present with a large display of their newest instruments. In addition York also had an exhibition of their new instruments based on the old Besson models. All participants took the opportunity to try and explore the instruments available, and rumors have it that several ordered new horns.

Participants in the youth ensemble

The second day included presentations and warm ups by Øystein and Tormod, in addition to ensemble playing and a tuba jazz lecture by Kristoffer Lo. Øystein and Tormod presented a shared recital of standard literature and new exciting pieces. Their exceptional musical presentations, exquisite technique and warm natural presence made the performance unforgettable for the audience.

Massed Ensemble performing under the directorship of Øystein Baadsvik at the final concert in the Vestby Church

The day ended with tuba jam session at the local train station, which is now a restaurant/bar with an intimate stage. Lars Andreas Haug was the main attraction together with local hero Kristoffer Lo. Lars Andreas has participated in 16 CD recordings and is a major figure in the Scandinavian jazz scene (music files can be accessed at www.larsandreas.no). Several workshop participants brought their instruments and joined in. Accompaniment was provided by a trio from the Jazz Conservatory in Trondheim.

All workshop participants after final concert (Standing front left): Ieva Struzaite, Øystein Baadvik, (front right) Tormod Flaten and Morten Bøe (host/organizer)

The third and last day of the event opened with a musical presentation by host and organizer Morten Bøe and some of his students, titled “Tuba quartet—an ensemble with many possibilities.” Focus was on repertoire of various difficulties and how to motivate and recruit young students by forming quartets. The rest of the day was spent playing in ensembles preparing the final concert, in addition to master classes for both tuba and euphonium. The closing concert was held in the old Vestby church and included all the ensembles formed during the workshop and the guest artists.

Øystein Baadsvik instructing breathing exercises with participant Alf Kjetil Thorsbakken

A great thank you goes to the fantastic guest artists, exhibitors, sponsors, and participants. Our hope and goal is to host a new workshop in 2009 and contribute to a strong and inspiring environment for tuba and euphonium in Norway.

Tormod Flaten directing the high school ensemble]
img]../../members/iteajournal/35N2/35N2images/nw19.jpg[/img]
Kristoffer Lo in jazz workshop

All photos by Bjorn Halvorsen.

By ITEAonline.org Editor

St. Mary's Slough, UK, hosted its 1000th. free Saturday Lunchtime Concert.

An audience of over 200 filled the Church to hear performances by the originator of the series, Malcolm Stowell, at the impressive Norman & Beard 1912 organ, Andrew Adams (cello), Henry Macey & David Darby (piano duet) and the Reading Minster Midweek Choir, conducted by David Butler.

The finale was a combination of choir, organ and the 8 piece Celebration Brass Ensemble in the premiere of 'In Tuneful Accord'. A special arrangement based on the hymn tune Laudate Dominum by Terry Treherne.

The free lunchtime concert series was started by organist and choirmaster Malcolm Stowell in January 1990, and bookings are now being taken for 2010! Concerts feature artists ranging from the youngest performers making their debut, to international concert performers, which in 2005 included the Rutgers University Chorus from Newark, New Jersey.

With it's natural acoustic, St. Mary's has also hosted many fine brass concerts, including over 30 recitals by euphonium soloist Charley Brighton, and visits by Capriccioso Brass, Freedom Brass & Windsor Festival Brass.

The future of these free concerts seems very secure, and they remain a very important part of keeping music 'live' in an age of easy access to CD/DVD and online concerts.

If you are visiting the UK, you can check the listings of the weekly performers at;

http://www.euph9.freeserve.co.uk/Stmarys.htm

By ITEAonline.org Editor
