WARREN DECK

Warren Deck was principal tuba of the New York Philharmonic Orchestra from 1979 to 2002. He began playing tuba at age nine in the Denver public schools. His family moved to Ann Arbor, Michigan, when he was twelve, and he attended the University of Michigan, where he studied with Abe Torchinsky, former tubist of the Philadelphia Orchestra. He spent four summers (1973-76) during his college years as a student and fellow at the Aspen Music Festival and School. Before his appointment to the Philharmonic, Mr. Deck held the positions of principal tuba of the Houston Symphony and teacher of tuba at Rice University for two seasons. He made his solo debut with the Philharmonic in 1989, performing the world premiere of Roger Kellaway's Songs of Ascent for tuba and orchestra, commissioned by the Philharmonic. As a member of the Juilliard School faculty from 1989 to 2002 he has been active with students, and has given master classes in many regions of the world, including the former Soviet Union, the Far East, and South America. Apart from the orchestral records he has made with the Philharmonic, Mr. Deck has made four recordings with the Canadian Brass for the Sony Classical and Philips labels, and Tuba, a recording of leading tuba and euphonium players from Germany and the U.S., for EMI Angel Records. Warren is currently on the faculty of The Lamont School of Music at the University of Denver and the Aspen Music Festival and School during the summer.
