Gustavo Subida

Born in Portugal, Gustavo Subida started playing the tuba at the age of 11 at the local wind band , in his hometown in Northern Portugal. At 14 he decided to take music seriously and begun his studies at the Espinho Professional Music School. His debut as a soloist happened two years later, with the Espinho Classical Orchestra. He then moved to the UK, where he studied at the Royal College of Music, in London, and at the Royal Northern College of Music,in Manchester, under the tuiton of James Gourlay, Mel Culbertson and Roger Bobo. In 2006, shortly before he gained his Bachelors Degree from the RNCM, he was appointed Principal Tuba with the Estonian National Opera. While in Estonia he performed chamber music recitals, solo recitals and was invited by the Estonian Label ERP, to record Fridrich Bruk’s “Symphony No. 6, for Orchestra and French Horn and Tuba Solo”, with the Liepaja Symphony Orchestra, in Latvia. He won the Runner-Up prize at the ITEC 2008 Tuba Competition ( Artist Division). Recently Gustavo gained a Diploma in Arts, from the Hochschule für Musik und Theater, in Hannover, Germany, under the tuiton of Jens Bjørn-Larsen. Since 2007, Gustavo has been the Principal Tuba with the Oulu Symphony Orchestra, in Finland, where he enjoys performing chamber music recitals and teaching.
