Research on Teaching and Learning: Where Philosophy meets Anecdotal and Statistical Evidence

What does the latest research on teaching and learning say about your teaching philosophy and methods? We will discuss recent publications in various fields, from the “success cult” to neuropsychology to see how many of the things we believe as teachers and learners stand up to formal and informal study. An annotated bibliography of readings in psychology, “expert performance”, sports science, and other fields will be provided along with critiques of various research methods as applied to the private studio and classroom teacher.

Kevin Wass is Associate Professor of Tuba and Euphonium at Texas Tech University in Lubbock, Texas. He holds the Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the University of Michigan, the Master of Music degree with Performer’s Certificate from Indiana University, and the Bachelor of Science degree in Music Education from Dana College. He is an active clinician and recitalist, having presented at the International Society for Music Education Conference in Bologna, Italy, the MidWest International Band and Orchestra Clinic in Chicago, and numerous times at the Texas Music Educators Association and Texas BandMasters Association conferences. In addition to his duties at Texas Tech, he performs as principal tubist of the Lubbock Symphony Orchestra and serves the International Tuba-Euphonium Association as Conferences Coordinator and Chair of the Harvey G. Phillips Awards for Excellence in Composition.
