President's Corner
David Zerkel, ITEA President
The weeks following ITEC 2010 have been full of exciting news for ITEA on many fronts!
Before sharing the news, I would be remiss if I did not take this opportunity to publicly acknowledge Kelly Thomas and Mark Nelson for bringing off an international conference that succeeded on absolutely every level--artistically, logistically, and last, but not least, financially! This year's conference was run under a new model in which the organization reviewed the host's budget proposal, suggested changes, and ultimately approved the budget with the understanding that ITEA would cover any loss or shortfall associated with the conference as long as the hosts acted in good faith operating within the budget that they proposed. I am happy to report that this model proved to be a big success. We ended comfortably in the black, and ITEA and the University of Arizona were able to divide the surplus, reinvesting the funds into new initiatives that will benefit our members, both locally and internationally.

We are fortunate to have three new folks assuming positions within the organization.
Adam McFarlin is the new Executive Director for ITEA, following the successful tenure of Jennifer Jester in this role. Adam trained as a tubist but has found his real calling to be in the area of arts administration. He currently serves on the Greater Kalamazoo Arts Council and brings a great deal of knowledge about the care and feeding of non-profit organizations. Please note that some of our operations will be changing from Baltimore to Kalamazoo.
Scott Hanson will now serve as the Treasurer of ITEA. Scott has a significant background in music, serving for ten years as the euphonium soloist of the Jack Daniels Silver Cornet Band. He has owned and operated two businesses and currently serves as the accountant for two real estate investment LLCs in Michigan. Scott's knowledge of music combined with his fiduciary skills will serve the organization well.
Mark Cox will serve in the role of Marketing Coordinator. Mark is Professor of Tuba and Euphonium at Central Michigan University and a member of the board of directors for the Leonard Falcone International Tuba Euphonium Festival. Mark's primary responsibility will be improving our relationships with current and future advertisers and underwriters for activities associated with ITEA. He is a tour de force and has hit the ground running!
Finally, the board is absolutely thrilled to announce that ITEC 2012 will be held in Linz, Austria. It has been some time since an ITEC has been held on the European continent, and we are very pleased to have a truly international event once again! The venue for the conference will be the famous Brucknerhaus set on the banks of the River Danube. The artistic director for the conference will be Steven Mead and he is keen to put on a phenomenal event. More news will follow as details emerge. Start saving now for an event that you will want to be sure not to miss!
I do hope that you are enjoying the end of your summer and hope that you have had the opportunity to spend some quality time with your families.
