From our President: Deanna Swoboda Hello ITEA Members! It is a sincere honor to begin my term as President. I feel as though I’m on my favorite amusement park ride. My adrenaline is racing, my heart is pumping, and I feel like screaming, “wheee!” Thank you for this opportunity. As I begin my term as ITEA President, I feel it is important to take a moment to recognize and celebrate the outstanding work accomplished over the past two years by David Zerkel. As our President, he doggedly worked to maintain the vision and stability of our Association, all the while blazing new trails for the advancement of the euphonium and tuba. The strides he made through his exemplary leadership will continue to influence all aspects of our future. I’d also like to give special thanks to Dennis AsKew, who is retiring from the Executive Committee and Board of Directors after leading for two terms as President and one as Past-President, marked by his personable approach and confident leadership style. It has been a true pleasure to serve with both of these great musicians. The past year has brought several changes, strengthening our mission to advance our art for all those who have an interest in the euphonium and tuba. One of the changes we made includes a larger, more diverse Board of Directors. The recent ballot initiative to expand the ITEA Board passed with flying colors and we now have representation for all constituencies. I would like to introduce you to our new Board of Directors:
Why does ITEA exist? Since 1973, the organization (then T.U.B.A.) has been dedicated to promoting and advancing the euphonium and tuba instruments. The organization comprises performers, educators, students, and amateurs of all backgrounds. As a non-profit organization, it is supported by membership dues and donations. We reflect on our past in order to form a new vision about the future. Our future is GROWTH. First and foremost we advocate growth for our membership. We are motivated to improve our communication and provide “up-to-date” resources for current members (journal and website content). We strive to develop and expand the “I” in ITEA—our international relations and presence. We anticipate collaborations with composers and other artists, to grow our performance repertoire. As a publishing company, we will continually improve and grow all aspects of the Tuba-Euphonium Press. In order to accomplish these goals, we must work together. The more we collaborate, the more progress we will make. This is where you come in. If you have an idea for growth, please share your idea and your expertise. We are listening! In order to strengthen our euphonium-tuba community, we need to offer those who are not part of our membership good reasons to join and participate. Please take the next opportunity to celebrate ITEA and to talk about why you’re a member. Perhaps it’s the social network of over 2000 members? Or, the excellent quarterly ITEA Journal? Or, the website full of interesting euphonium and tuba topics? Or, the opportunity to attend ITEC 2012 in Linz, Austria!? Whatever your reasons may be, remember that this is your organization and we continually inspire each other to new heights. I look forward to meeting you along the way!
