From our President: Deanna Swoboda

Hello ITEA Members! It is a sincere honor to begin my term as President. I feel as though I’m on my favorite amusement park ride. My adrenaline is racing, my heart is pumping, and I feel like screaming, “wheee!” Thank you for this opportunity.

As I begin my term as ITEA President, I feel it is important to take a moment to recognize and celebrate the outstanding work accomplished over the past two years by David Zerkel. As our President, he doggedly worked to maintain the vision and stability of our Association, all the while blazing new trails for the advancement of the euphonium and tuba. The strides he made through his exemplary leadership will continue to influence all aspects of our future. I’d also like to give special thanks to Dennis AsKew, who is retiring from the Executive Committee and Board of Directors after leading for two terms as President and one as Past-President, marked by his personable approach and confident leadership style. It has been a true pleasure to serve with both of these great musicians.

The past year has brought several changes, strengthening our mission to advance our art for all those who have an interest in the euphonium and tuba. One of the changes we made includes a larger, more diverse Board of Directors. The recent ballot initiative to expand the ITEA Board passed with flying colors and we now have representation for all constituencies. I would like to introduce you to our new Board of Directors:

Deanna Swoboda- President
Jerry Young- Vice-President/President Elect
David Zerkel- Past President
Scott Hanson- Business representative
Pat Stuckemeyer- Business representative
John Griffith- Enthusiast representative
Adam Frey- Euphonium at-large representative
Patricio Consentino- International representative
Jens Bjørn Larsen- International representative
Chris Carbone- Legal representative
Mark Jenkins- Military Band representative
Kathy Brantigan- Non-profit representative
Jeffrey Anderson- Orchestral representative
Jason Smith- Publications representative
Stephanie Frye- Student representative
Joe Skillen- Tuba at-large representative
Kelly Thomas- Euphonium at-large representative

Why does ITEA exist? Since 1973, the organization (then T.U.B.A.) has been dedicated to promoting and advancing the euphonium and tuba instruments. The organization comprises performers, educators, students, and amateurs of all backgrounds. As a non-profit organization, it is supported by membership dues and donations.

We reflect on our past in order to form a new vision about the future. Our future is GROWTH. First and foremost we advocate growth for our membership. We are motivated to improve our communication and provide “up-to-date” resources for current members (journal and website content). We strive to develop and expand the “I” in ITEA—our international relations and presence. We anticipate collaborations with composers and other artists, to grow our performance repertoire. As a publishing company, we will continually improve and grow all aspects of the Tuba-Euphonium Press.

In order to accomplish these goals, we must work together. The more we collaborate, the more progress we will make. This is where you come in. If you have an idea for growth, please share your idea and your expertise. We are listening! In order to strengthen our euphonium-tuba community, we need to offer those who are not part of our membership good reasons to join and participate. Please take the next opportunity to celebrate ITEA and to talk about why you’re a member. Perhaps it’s the social network of over 2000 members? Or, the excellent quarterly ITEA Journal? Or, the website full of interesting euphonium and tuba topics? Or, the opportunity to attend ITEC 2012 in Linz, Austria!?   Whatever your reasons may be, remember that this is your organization and we continually inspire each other to new heights. I look forward to meeting you along the way!

HARVEY PHILLIPS CELEBRATION -- FESTIVAL OF FRIENDS OCTUBAFEST 2011
INDIANA UNIVERSITY, BLOOMINGTON, INDIANA, MAC AUDITORIUM, 3:00 PM, OCTUBA 15, 2011 A RECEPTION IN THE LOBBY OF THE MAC WILL FOLLOW THE PROGRAM

Harvey Phillips gave the tuba "class and integrity." His influence on the rest of the brass instruments was second to none. Much of what we have today as musicians, and especially as tuba players, is due to the efforts of Harvey Phillips. Harvey always preferred to have a Celebration of his life. Therefore I am hosting a presentation and gathering of his many friends to celebrate Harvey's incredible life and accomplishments. What could be better than celebrating OCTUBAFEST 2011 honoring the person who started it all?

To honor Harvey, we will be showing films and pictures of him throughout the program. We are also seeking to establish an endowed scholarship in his name that would benefit the Jacobs School of Music tuba students into perpetuity. Information on how you can make a gift to this scholarship is enclosed. Please send any pictures that you think would be of interest to Matthew Wisley, Development Assistant, Indiana University Jacobs School of Music, 1201 E. Third Street, Bloomington, IN 47405 or email to mcwisley@indiana.edu.

All former students of Harvey's, IU grads, friends and former colleagues are cordially invited to attend this tribute to Harvey. Let us pack the hall and hopefully have national news coverage.

For more information, visit the Harvey Phillips Memorial Page: http://blogs.music.indiana.edu/harveyphillips.

Sincerely,
Daniel Perantoni
